What Is Roofing Underlayment?
Roofing underlayment is the waterproof barrier installed between your roof deck and the outer roofing material (shingles, metal, tile). It's your roof's last line of defense against water intrusion โ and in Austin's climate of intense rain bursts, hail, and extreme heat, the right underlayment choice matters more than most homeowners realize.
Three Types of Roofing Underlayment
1. Felt underlayment (15 lb or 30 lb): The traditional option. Made from organic or fiberglass mat saturated with asphalt. Costs $0.15โ$0.25/sq ft. In Austin, 30 lb felt is the minimum โ 15 lb tears too easily in our wind conditions. Drawback: degrades quickly when exposed to UV, so it must be covered with shingles within days of installation.
2. Synthetic underlayment: Woven polypropylene that's lighter, stronger, and more UV-resistant than felt. Costs $0.25โ$0.50/sq ft. This is the standard we recommend for Austin homes โ it can withstand UV exposure for up to 6 months if installation is delayed, lies flat in our 100ยฐF+ heat without buckling, and provides superior tear resistance during our spring storm season.
3. Self-adhering (peel-and-stick) underlayment: Rubberized asphalt membrane that bonds directly to the roof deck. Costs $0.75โ$1.50/sq ft. Required by code in Austin for ice dam protection at eaves and around penetrations. Provides the best waterproofing but is too expensive for full-roof application on most homes.
Which Underlayment Works Best in Austin?
For most Austin residential roofs, RISE Roofing installs synthetic underlayment as the full-roof standard with self-adhering membrane at all critical points โ eaves, valleys, around skylights, and pipe penetrations. This combination provides maximum protection against Austin's flash-flood rain intensity while keeping costs reasonable.
Austin building code requires self-adhering underlayment at eaves (minimum 24" past the interior wall line) and in valleys. This isn't optional โ it's a code requirement that some contractors skip to save money. RISE Roofing always exceeds minimum code requirements.
Underlayment Matters More in Hail Alley
When hail cracks shingles, the underlayment is all that stands between rain and your roof deck. Quality synthetic underlayment buys you critical time โ preventing leaks for weeks or months until repairs can be completed. Cheap felt underlayment fails within days of shingle damage, leading to interior water damage and mold.
